Much like how Miss Tesla rearranges our apartment once every 3 weeks (Asperger’s lends to some interesting behaviour sometimes for her), I like changing my phone’s hotspot wifi name every month.
She named our home wifi back when we first got Comcrap.
Oppo!!! I know we’re a creative bunch, so I’m curious, what is your current wifi SSID name?
And uh, have a plane truck for your time.
And obligatory “Spirit of LeMons”

Mine is the generic “Trendnet 2.4GHz etc etc” and my password is some 20-digit number that it came with. I miss having time to mess around, like my neighbor’s “FBI Surveillance Van” (a perennial favorite). Funfact: The L-1011 had a couple elevators in the galley. Flight attendants could go down, prepare the food, and bring it up. Pretty crazy.

Ours is just my mum’s last name. At university, though, it was called Wireless Cancer Generator, and had a 50-something character long password.

I tend to make referential or punny hostnames for my machines.
My router is a MikroTik RouterBoard RB493G. IIRC, deer ticks, or Ixodes scapularis , are one of the smaller species of tick - a micro tick, you could say. So, scapularis.bhtooefr.org is my router, and scapularis is its SSID.

Mine was B7R, after the classic battlespace in Ace Combat Zero.
I’ve also done, “An Internet” as though my wifi was a single bit of the greater series of internet tubes.

Our’s was “The Magic School Bus” until we had to get a new router. Now it’s the default name. We’ve been too lazy to rename it :/

I called it John Carter, and made the password something completely irrelevant to Terminator, just for the satisfaction of the mild confusion of others.

I named my parents WIFI after my brother and sister, brotherstophittingsister. It hasn’t changed in years. I’m surprised my sister hasn’t changed it yet.

Still rolling with the name it came with: GoldOak & GoldOak 5ghz
I kind of like the name and it fits my neighborhood well, from when I lived in a condo to the current house.

my home wifi is just the generic default name, but I think my phone is set up as ‘DropItLikeItsHotspot’ or something similar.
I’ve seen some really funny/clever ones though.

I’m surprised to see another Mikrotik user. They’re kind of rare, but I seem to end up putting them in everything because they’re cheap, reliable, super flexible, and just do their job... you wouldn’t believe how many thousands (probably well into the tens of thousands now) that are in use because of me.

I just wish the wifi situation were better. I wonder if there’s now a Mini-PCIe replacement for the RB493G, because dual band isn’t possible on the cheaper boards with integrated wifi (at least last I looked into it), and the RB493G can’t do 802.11ac due to a lack of Mini-PCI 802.11ac cards (802.11n being the very last it can handle).

So, bit if trivia ...
... where is the galley in an L-1011 Tristar?
![]() 01/27/2017 at 19:52 |

Their newer integrated offerings have dual-chain 802.11ac Atheros chipsets.
They’re not as extendable as the RB493G, but there are options.
It depends on what you need in a router...

I’m thinking of something like this, which is still only a 2.4 GHz b/g/n chip: https://routerboard.com/RB2011UiAS-2HnD-IN
It would’ve been fine for my needs except for not having dual band support, really. (This was like three or so years ago that I got the RB493G, and there hasn’t been anything better at that level, IIRC.)

The problem is that they’re treading a super thin line. Sometimes I want more, but ultimately they make most of their money on WISP equipment. When you hit ~$250-350, you might as well move up to PC hardware, although it is hard to find more than a couple mini-PCIe slots on a board.

I have a few. Vesivius, Arwen, and Cancer. They’ve been the same for years. I should probably change them.
